Alopecia Treatment

Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles causing hair loss. The damage to the follicles however, is usually not permanent. It is not known why the immune system attacks the hair follicles. It is most common in people under the age of 20 years, but adults and children of any age can be affected. It affects both genders. Corticosteroids are used to treat this condition however there is an alternative – low level laser therapy.

Low level laser therapy – helping treat Alopecia

Low level laser therapy – also known as cold laser – a medical grade, painless therapeutic laser used as an effective treatment to reduce inflammation, restore healthy tissue and reduce pain.

What causes Alopecia Areata?

The exact cause of alopecia areata isn’t known but it has been linked to abnormal activity in the immune system.  It most commonly occurs in those with a family history of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or type 1 diabetes.  The hair follicles are attacked by the body’s own immune system causing disruption of normal hair growth.  Alopecia Areata is not contagious.

Symptoms of Alopecia Areata

  • Small bald patches on the head. The affected skin isn’t scarred and looks normal
  • Bald patches of different shapes, mostly round or oval
  • The scalp and beard are most commonly affected, but it can occur on any part of the body where there is hair
  • Hair loss and regrowth can be seen on different areas of the skin
  • The area where hair loss occurs can feel painful or tingling
  • The hair usually falls out in a short period of time
  • Hair is narrower along the strand closer to the base of the skin or scalp

How is alopecia areata treated?

There’s no cure for alopecia areata, but the condition can be treated. Treatments may stop future hair loss or enable rapid hair growth. Since hair normally grows back within a year, some people decide not to pursue any treatment. No drugs or hair-care products have been linked with the cause of alopecia areata.

  • Eliminating emotional stress is often helpful
  • The most common treatment involves corticosteroids injections into the scalp every 4-6 weeks
  • Corticosteroid cream may be applied to the affected area of the scalp.
  • Minoxidil (Rogaine) may be used in combination with topical corticosteroids
  • Oral corticosteroids have been shown to lessen the hair loss, but that is only for the period during which they are taken. These drugs can also cause serious side effects.

Instant or long-lasting relief cannot be guaranteed as results vary for each patient due to age, health condition, type of injury, lifestyle and concurrent treatments, however clinical evidence and our patients’ experiences indicate low level laser to be a worthwhile and effective treatment option for Alopecia.
