Low Level Laser Therapy and Scars
When the body’s biological process works to close an open wound to protect the body from bacteria, normal skin is replaced with scar tissue, leaving a visible reminder of the injury. This scar tissue is made up of collagen, that connects the tissues that were broken apart. Two of the most common types of scars are Keloid and Hypertrophic scarring.
Keloid Scars are excessive clusters of scar tissue that tend to grow beyond the edges of a wound. When the body continues to produce collagen, a tough fibrous protein, after the wound has healed, nodular, itchy Keloid scars can form.
Hypertrophic Scars are thick and raised, often described as leather-like and darker in colour than the surrounding skin. They are usually confined to the original area of the wound and can develop over time.
Scars can be caused by
- Surgical incision
- Vaccination sites
Treating Scars with Low Level Laser Therapy
Low level laser therapy or LLLT, is an effective treatment to reduce the visibility of scars, improving appearance and texture. LLLT uses uses red and infrared light to penetrate the skin’s sub-layers treating its support structure. This promotes natural healing, replacing damaged tissue with new cells.
- Scars from trauma, surgery and acne can be treated
- Injuries heal more rapidly
- Promotes microcirculation
- Reduces inflammation
- Non toxic, no side effects
- Non-invasive, does not harm the skin
