Women's health encompasses far more than routine check-ups, contraception and cervical screening. For many women, living with complex women's health conditions means years of dismissed symptoms, incomplete diagnoses, and a feeling that their concerns aren't being taken seriously.

The reality is that women's bodies are still significantly under-researched compared to men's, and conditions that disproportionately affect women - such as endometriosis, lichen sclerosus, and PMDD, have historically been minimised, misattributed to stress or anxiety, or simply left unexplored. A woman in Australia waits an average of seven to ten years to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis. Many women with PMDD are told their symptoms are "just PMS." Lichen sclerosus is routinely misdiagnosed for years.

But awareness is growing, and so too is the expectation that women's health concerns, however complex or sensitive, deserve thorough investigation and genuine answers. From vulval and vaginal conditions to hormonal disorders, pelvic pain, perinatal mental health, and the often-overlooked challenges of menopause after cancer, the breadth of what falls under "women's health" is vast.

Here we outline some of the more complex women's health concerns - what they are, why they matter, and how an experienced GP can help.

Vulval, Vaginal and Bladder Health

Many women experience symptoms affecting the vulva, vagina or bladder that they find difficult or embarrassing to raise, including itching, burning, pain, discharge, dryness, or urinary symptoms. These concerns are common, they are valid, and they are very much something a GP can help with.

Conditions in this area include vulvodynia (chronic vulval pain), vaginal atrophy (particularly common after menopause or cancer treatment), recurrent thrush, bacterial vaginosis, and recurrent urinary tract infections. A careful assessment and accurate diagnosis makes an enormous difference to treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Lichen Sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects the vulval and perianal area. It can cause significant discomfort including intense itching, pain, skin thinning, and changes in skin architecture, and is frequently misdiagnosed or left untreated for years. With appropriate management, including topical treatments and ongoing monitoring, many women experience significant relief and a reduction in long-term complications.

Menopause After Cancer

Women who have been through cancer treatment, or who have been advised they have contraindications to conventional hormone replacement therapy, often find themselves navigating menopause with very little support. Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical treatments can trigger sudden or early menopause, bringing with it significant symptoms that profoundly affect quality of life.

The question of whether hormone therapy is safe after cancer is complex and nuanced, and the answer is not always a simple no. For many women, there are options worth exploring - whether that is certain forms of HRT where evidence supports their use, non-hormonal medications to manage hot flushes and mood, vaginal oestrogen for localised symptoms, or lifestyle and complementary strategies. Treatment recommendations can be made that are aligned with your individual cancer history.

PMS and PMDD

Most women experience some degree of premenstrual symptoms, but for some, the days or weeks before their period bring debilitating mood changes, anxiety, depression, rage, or physical symptoms that significantly disrupt their relationships, work, and daily life. This is often due to a recognised medical condition called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

PMDD is distinct from general PMS and requires specific assessment and management. Treatment options include targeted nutritional and lifestyle strategies, hormonal approaches to stabilise the cycle, and in some cases, antidepressant medication used cyclically or continuously. Many women find that having their experience validated and properly treated is transformative.

Postnatal Depression and Perinatal Mental Health

The period following childbirth can be one of the most emotionally vulnerable times in a woman's life. Postnatal depression affects approximately one in five Australian mothers, and it often goes unrecognised, partly because new mothers are under enormous pressure to appear to be coping, and partly because the symptoms can be subtle and develop gradually.

Postnatal depression is not a reflection of your love for your baby or your ability as a mother. It is a medical condition with effective treatments. GP’s can provide a safe and non-judgmental space to talk honestly about how you are feeling, and support you with a range of options from counselling and psychological support to medication where needed. Care can also be provided during pregnancy for women with a history of perinatal mental health concerns.

Endometriosis and PCOS: Managing Complex Hormonal Conditions with Confidence

Endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are two of the most common and most undertreated conditions in women's health. Both can profoundly impact fertility, pain levels, hormonal balance, weight, mood, and long-term health.

Endometriosis affects approximately one in nine Australian women and takes an average of seven to ten years to diagnose. PCOS affects up to one in five women and has implications well beyond reproductive health, including increased risks of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

GP’s can help with thorough investigation, clear explanation of your diagnosis, discussion of management options (medical, surgical, and lifestyle-based) and ongoing support to help you live well despite these conditions. You do not need to simply "put up with" the symptoms.

Chronic Pelvic Pain

Chronic pelvic pain - defined as persistent pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis lasting six months or more - is one of the most complex and frequently under-investigated presentations in women's health. It may be related to endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder conditions such as interstitial cystitis, bowel conditions, nerve pain, or a combination of several factors.

Because its causes are often multifactorial, chronic pelvic pain requires a thorough, systematic approach. GP’s can start with a detailed assessment and where appropriate, coordinate care with gynaecologists, pelvic floor physiotherapists, pain specialists, and other allied health professionals. Pain that has been dismissed or unexplained for years can, in many cases, be significantly improved with the right support.

Fitting and Removing Contraceptive Devices (Coils)

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) including both hormonal (Mirena, Kyleena) and copper (non-hormonal) options are highly effective forms of long-acting reversible contraception. They can also be used therapeutically to manage heavy periods and endometriosis symptoms.

Many GP’s are experienced in both the fitting and removal of intrauterine devices, and some GP’s have unique expertise in complex IUD removals where the device has become difficult to locate or remove. Complex removals may be required if strings are not visible, if the device has shifted position, or if previous removal attempts have been unsuccessful elsewhere.

IUD procedures can feel daunting, and caring GP’s take time to ensure you are well-informed, comfortable, and supported throughout. Pain management options can be discussed prior to the procedure.

If you're visiting the doctor regularly or dealing with ongoing health conditions, your medical bills can add up quickly. The good news? The Medicare Safety Net is designed to help Australians reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses once you've spent a certain amount in a calendar year.

This comprehensive guide explains everything you need to know about the Medicare Safety Net, who qualifies, and how you can maximise your benefits in 2025.

What is the Medicare Safety Net?

The Medicare Safety Net is a government program that provides higher Medicare rebates for out-of-hospital medical services once your medical costs exceed certain thresholds in a calendar year. Think of it as a financial safety cushion that kicks in when your healthcare costs start to pile up.

There are actually two separate safety nets that work together to provide extra support:

1. Original Medicare Safety Net (OMSN)

The Original Medicare Safety Net helps with your gap expenses – the difference between what Medicare pays (85% of the schedule fee) and the full schedule fee.

2. Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)

The Extended Medicare Safety Net helps with your out-of-pocket costs – the difference between what your doctor charges and what you get back from Medicare.

How it works:

Once your out-of-pocket costs reach the threshold, Medicare will pay up to 80% of any future out-of-pocket costs
This applies for the rest of the calendar year
Some services have benefit caps, which means there's a maximum amount Medicare will pay

2025 EMSN Thresholds:

General threshold: $2,615.50 (for singles, couples, and families)

Concessional threshold: $834.50 (for concession card holders and Family Tax Benefit Part A recipients)

Who is Eligible for the Extended Medicare Safety Net?

You're eligible if you:

Are enrolled in Medicare
Are a single person, OR
Are part of a registered couple or family
Hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (for the lower concessional threshold)
Receive Family Tax Benefit Part A (for the lower concessional threshold)

Couples and families must register with Services Australia to combine expenses. This helps you reach the threshold faster and access benefits sooner!

What's NOT covered:

In-hospital services
Services not listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)
Day surgery facilities classified as hospitals
Dental services (unless specifically listed on MBS)
Ambulance services
Allied health services not covered by Medicare

Important: The distinction between in-hospital and out-of-hospital isn't always obvious. Many day surgery facilities are classified as hospitals. Always check with your GP or specialist about whether a service qualifies.

Understanding Verified vs. Unverified Payments

This is essential! Only verified payments count towards your Safety Net thresholds.

Verified Payments

You pay your doctor's fee in full before making a Medicare claim
The payment is automatically tracked and counts towards your threshold
Most common when you pay at the time of service

Unverified Payments

You don't pay before claiming from Medicare (e.g., bulk billing or doctor bills Medicare directly)
These payments do NOT count towards your threshold until you pay them
If you have unverified payments, you'll need to pay them before they count

Ask your doctor's reception whether you need to pay upfront for the payment to be verified and count towards your Safety Net.

How to Register for the Medicare Safety Net

If you're single, you're automatically enrolled in the Original Medicare Safety Net – nothing to do.

However, couples and families must register to combine their medical expenses for the Extended Medicare Safety Net. Registration helps you reach the threshold faster.

Even though Medicare tracks most payments automatically, keep your receipts just in case. This helps if there are any discrepancies.

3. Always Pay Before Claiming

Make sure your payments are verified by paying your doctor's fee before claiming from Medicare. Unverified payments don't count towards your threshold.

4. Check Your Progress Regularly

Monitor your Safety Net balance using myGov. Knowing when you're close to the threshold can help you plan medical appointments.

5. Update Your Family Details

If you have a baby, get married, separate from a partner, or your child finishes studying, update your Medicare Safety Net family registration immediately.

6. Understand EMSN Benefit Caps

Some services have caps on how much Medicare will pay. Ask your doctor if there's a benefit cap on your specific service.

Lung Cancer Screening: Why Early Detection Matters

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia. What makes it so serious is that it often develops quietly, showing no signs until it has already advanced. The good news is that medical research has shown one powerful way to change this story: lung cancer screening.

What is Lung Cancer Screening?

Lung cancer screening uses a low-dose CT scan to take detailed images of the lungs. The scan looks for small growths known as nodules. Most nodules are not cancer, but finding and monitoring them early gives doctors the chance to act before cancer develops or spreads.

Unlike standard x-rays, low-dose CT scans are designed to minimise radiation exposure while still producing clear images. This balance makes them safe and highly effective for screening purposes.

Why Screening is Important

Early-stage lung cancer is much easier to treat than advanced disease. When cancer is caught early, treatment options are more successful and many people can return to their normal lives. Waiting until symptoms appear—such as a persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, or coughing up blood—often means the cancer is already at a later stage.

That’s why screening is offered to people who feel healthy and have no signs of lung problems. It’s not about responding to symptoms, but about staying one step ahead.

Who is Eligible?

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program focuses on those at higher risk.

You may be eligible if:

• You are between 50 and 70 years old 
• You currently smoke, or you quit within the last 10 years 
• You have smoked the equivalent of 30 pack-years (for example, one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years) 
• You do not currently have symptoms of lung cancer 

If you meet these criteria, your GP can refer you for a free, Medicare-covered scan every two years.

When to See a Doctor Straight Away

Screening is not a substitute for medical care if you have symptoms. If you notice a new or ongoing cough, unexplained tiredness, chest or shoulder pain, coughing up blood, or sudden shortness of breath, it’s important to see your doctor promptly—even if your last screening was clear.

The Bigger Picture: Prevention and Support

While smoking is the single biggest risk factor for lung cancer, quitting at any stage reduces your risk. Programs and resources are available to help people stop smoking, and combining that with regular screening can dramatically improve outcomes.

Lung cancer screening saves lives by finding disease early—often before symptoms begin. If you’re in the higher-risk group, talk to your doctor about whether you’re eligible.

What Is an Asthma Action Plan?

An asthma action plan is a written set of instructions developed with your GP. It outlines:
Your usual asthma medications and how to take them

How to monitor your symptoms or peak flow readings
What to do if your symptoms worsen
What to do during a severe asthma attack
Emergency contacts and steps

It acts as a guide for you, your family, school staff (if your child has asthma), or carers, so that everyone knows exactly what to do if things change.

Why Do You Need an Asthma Action Plan?

Asthma symptoms can change quickly, and it’s not always obvious when a mild episode could become something more serious. An action plan for asthma gives you a clear step-by-step guide to follow in every situation, from daily care to a potential emergency.

Research shows that people who have an asthma action plan are:

Less likely to need emergency care
More likely to take their preventer medication correctly
More confident in recognising and managing worsening symptoms

For children, it also helps teachers and caregivers respond appropriately and quickly.

Asthma Action Plan for Adults

Even if you’ve had asthma for years, symptoms can change over time. Your asthma management plan should be reviewed at least once a year or if:

You have had worsening symptoms or more flare-ups
You’ve changed medication or dosage
You’ve been to hospital or needed urgent care
You require tailored support through aged care services

What to do if they start coughing, wheezing or feeling short of breath
What to do during an asthma attack

We recommend bringing your plan to school and ensuring staff have a copy on file. A spacer and reliever medication should also be kept on hand if recommended.
