Women's health encompasses far more than routine check-ups, contraception and cervical screening. For many women, living with complex women's health conditions means years of dismissed symptoms, incomplete diagnoses, and a feeling that their concerns aren't being taken seriously.

The reality is that women's bodies are still significantly under-researched compared to men's, and conditions that disproportionately affect women - such as endometriosis, lichen sclerosus, and PMDD, have historically been minimised, misattributed to stress or anxiety, or simply left unexplored. A woman in Australia waits an average of seven to ten years to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis. Many women with PMDD are told their symptoms are "just PMS." Lichen sclerosus is routinely misdiagnosed for years.

But awareness is growing, and so too is the expectation that women's health concerns, however complex or sensitive, deserve thorough investigation and genuine answers. From vulval and vaginal conditions to hormonal disorders, pelvic pain, perinatal mental health, and the often-overlooked challenges of menopause after cancer, the breadth of what falls under "women's health" is vast.

Here we outline some of the more complex women's health concerns - what they are, why they matter, and how an experienced GP can help.

Our women's health clinic spans all stages of life, from pre-teen to post-menopausal and every age in between.

A careful assessment and accurate diagnosis makes an enormous difference to treatment outcomes and quality of life.

Learn more about vulval health.

Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical treatments can trigger sudden or early menopause, bringing with it significant symptoms that profoundly affect quality of life.

The question of whether hormone therapy is safe after cancer is complex and nuanced, and the answer is not always a simple no. For many women, there are options worth exploring - whether that is certain forms of HRT where evidence supports their use, non-hormonal medications to manage hot flushes and mood, vaginal oestrogen for localised symptoms, or lifestyle and complementary strategies. Treatment recommendations can be made that are aligned with your individual cancer history.

Learn more about our Menopause Clinic

This is often due to a recognised medical condition called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

PMDD is distinct from general PMS and requires specific assessment and management. Treatment options include targeted nutritional and lifestyle strategies, hormonal approaches to stabilise the cycle, and in some cases, antidepressant medication used cyclically or continuously.
The period following childbirth can be one of the most emotionally vulnerable times in a woman's life. Postnatal depression affects approximately one in five Australian mothers, and it often goes unrecognised, partly because new mothers are under enormous pressure to appear to be coping, and partly because the symptoms can be subtle and develop gradually.

Postnatal depression is not a reflection of your love for your baby or your ability as a mother. It is a medical condition with effective treatments. GP’s can provide a safe and non-judgmental space to talk honestly about how you are feeling, and support you with a range of options from counselling and psychological support to medication where needed. Care can also be provided during pregnancy for women with a history of perinatal mental health concerns.

More on our postnatal services here.

Endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are two of the most common and most undertreated conditions in women's health. Both can profoundly impact fertility, pain levels, hormonal balance, weight, mood, and long-term health.

Endometriosis affects approximately one in nine Australian women and takes an average of seven to ten years to diagnose. PCOS affects up to one in five women and has implications well beyond reproductive health, including increased risks of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

GP’s can help with thorough investigation, clear explanation of your diagnosis, discussion of management options (medical, surgical, and lifestyle-based) and ongoing support to help you live well despite these conditions. You do not need to simply "put up with" the symptoms.

Chronic pelvic pain - defined as persistent pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis lasting six months or more - is one of the most complex and frequently under-investigated presentations in women's health. It may be related to endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder conditions such as interstitial cystitis, bowel conditions, nerve pain, or a combination of several factors.

Because its causes are often multifactorial, chronic pelvic pain requires a thorough, systematic approach. GP’s can start with a detailed assessment and where appropriate, coordinate care with gynaecologists, pelvic floor physiotherapists, pain specialists, and other allied health professionals. Pain that has been dismissed or unexplained for years can, in many cases, be significantly improved with the right support.

What Medical Services Are Covered?

The Medicare Safety Nets apply to out-of-hospital Medicare services including:

GP and specialist consultations

Services in private clinics

Private emergency department visits

Many pathology tests

Diagnostic imaging services (X-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs)

What's NOT covered:

In-hospital services

Services not listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS)

Day surgery facilities classified as hospitals

Dental services (unless specifically listed on MBS)

Ambulance services

Allied health services not covered by Medicare

Important: The distinction between in-hospital and out-of-hospital isn't always obvious. Many day surgery facilities are classified as hospitals. Always check with your GP or specialist about whether a service qualifies.

Understanding Verified vs. Unverified Payments

This is essential! Only verified payments count towards your Safety Net thresholds.

Verified Payments

You pay your doctor's fee in full before making a Medicare claim

The payment is automatically tracked and counts towards your threshold

Most common when you pay at the time of service

Unverified Payments

You don't pay before claiming from Medicare (e.g., bulk billing or doctor bills Medicare directly)

These payments do NOT count towards your threshold until you pay them

If you have unverified payments, you'll need to pay them before they count

Ask your doctor's reception whether you need to pay upfront for the payment to be verified and count towards your Safety Net.

How to Register for the Medicare Safety Net

If you're single, you're automatically enrolled in the Original Medicare Safety Net – nothing to do.

However, couples and families must register to combine their medical expenses for the Extended Medicare Safety Net. Registration helps you reach the threshold faster.

Click here to find out how to register.

Who Can Be Included in a Family Registration?

Couples:

Married couples

De facto couples (same-sex or opposite-sex)

Dependants:

Children under 16 years

Full-time students aged 16-25 years

Important notes:

You only need to register once

If your family situation changes (new baby, separation, child turns 26), you must notify Medicare

Dependants can be registered under two different Safety Net families, but their expenses only count towards the family that pays for their medical services

Log into your myGov account or contact Services Australia if you'd like to find out how close you are to reaching the threshold.

Click here for real world examples of how much you can save.

Tips to Maximise Your Medicare Safety Net Benefits

1. Register as a Family
If you're a couple or have dependents, register to combine expenses. This helps you reach the threshold faster.

2. Keep All Receipts

Even though Medicare tracks most payments automatically, keep your receipts just in case. This helps if there are any discrepancies.

3. Always Pay Before Claiming

Make sure your payments are verified by paying your doctor's fee before claiming from Medicare. Unverified payments don't count towards your threshold.

4. Check Your Progress Regularly

Monitor your Safety Net balance using myGov. Knowing when you're close to the threshold can help you plan medical appointments.

5. Update Your Family Details

If you have a baby, get married, separate from a partner, or your child finishes studying, update your Medicare Safety Net family registration immediately.

6. Understand EMSN Benefit Caps

Some services have caps on how much Medicare will pay. Ask your doctor if there's a benefit cap on your specific service.

Take Action: Register Today

Don't miss out on potential savings. If you're part of a couple or family, registering for the Medicare Safety Net takes just a few minutes and could save you hundreds or even thousands
of dollars in medical expenses.

Need Help?

Services Australia Contact:

Phone: 132 011 (Medicare general enquiries)

Website: www.servicesaustralia.gov.au

In person: Visit your nearest Services Australia Centre

Medical Billing Questions

Always feel free to ask our reception team about:

Whether payments will be verified

How much your out-of-pocket costs will be

The Medicare rebate amount on consultations and treatments you book

The Medicare Safety Net is a valuable benefit that can significantly reduce your medical expenses, especially if you or your family members need regular medical care. By understanding how it works, registering as a family if applicable, and keeping track of your
expenses, you can make the most of this important safety net.

There's no better time to check your eligibility, register if needed, and start tracking your progress towards these money-saving benefits.

Make sure you're getting every dollar back that you're entitled to.

1. Celebrating Spring Together

At both our Robina Town Medical Centre and Easy T Medical Centre practices, our team and GP’s enjoyed marking the start of the season with a bit of fun. To welcome spring, we embraced a floral theme, filling the clinic with colour, smiles and a little extra cheer for patients walking through the door.

It’s a simple reminder that healthcare is not just about appointments and check-ups, but also about connection and community. We hope you enjoy the photos we’ve shared from the day - it was a wonderful way to celebrate the start of spring together.

2. Stay Ahead of Spring Allergies

The Gold Coast is beautiful at this time of year, with flowering jacarandas and other florals blooming. Unfortunately, this also means more pollen in the air. Hay fever and asthma flare-ups are common in spring, with symptoms such as:

Sneezing and runny nose

Itchy or watery eyes

Tightness in the chest or wheezing

If you’re experiencing symptoms, it’s best not to ignore them. GP’s can refer you for allergy testing, help you identify your triggers and recommend treatment to keep your symptoms under control. For those with asthma, spring is the perfect time to review your Asthma Action Plan and check your inhaler technique with our practice nurses.

3. Book a Skin Check Before Summer

We all know Gold Coasters love the sun. Beach days, outdoor sport and barbecues in the backyard are part of the lifestyle. But with this comes an increased risk of skin cancer. Queensland has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, so early detection really matters.

If it’s been more than 12 months since your last skin check, or if you’ve noticed new or changing spots, book in now. GPs at both of our clinics offer thorough skin cancer checks, and if needed, can provide treatment and follow-up care all in the one place. Getting this done in spring means you’ll step into summer with peace of mind.

4. Refresh Your Healthy Habits

Spring is a great time to reset your health goals. With lighter mornings and warmer evenings, it’s easier to fit in a walk, a swim or some time at the gym. Pairing activity with nutritious meals helps support energy, weight management and overall wellbeing.

If you’d like support to kick-start a healthier routine, our dedicated Weight Loss Clinic is here to help. GPs with additional training in medically-supervised weight loss therapies and counselling provide tailored plans that include nutrition, exercise and treatments designed to keep you on track

5. Support Your Mental Health

While spring can feel energising, it can also bring a sense of pressure with end-of-year commitments, work deadlines and social events starting to pile up. Stress, poor sleep and changes in mood are easy to brush off, but they can take a toll on your health.

Checking in with your GP is a simple way to access support. Whether you’d benefit from lifestyle strategies, counselling referrals or medical treatment, we’re here to listen and help you find what works best.

6. Navigating Life Changes

Spring is often seen as a season of change, and it’s a good reminder to check in on the bigger picture of your health. At RTMC, our doctors support you through all stages of life:

Menopause and perimenopause: If you’re experiencing hot flushes, sleep disturbances or mood changes, our GPs with a special interest in menopause can provide tailored treatments and support

Travel health: If you’re planning an overseas trip, make sure your vaccinations are up to date and you’re prepared for your destination.

Routine health checks: Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and cancer screening checks are easy to put off, but they can make a big difference in long-term health.

7. Make the Most of Local Services

Did you know we also provide on-site diagnostic ultrasound with our sonographer, Jo-ann Campbell. This means you don’t have to travel far for essential scans. Having these services available within the clinic makes your healthcare more convenient and ensures continuity of care with your GP.

We’re Your Medical Home

At Robina Town Medical Centre, we believe good health care is personal. We know our community and we’ve been supporting Gold Coasters since 1996. Whether you need help with seasonal allergies, a skin check, support with weight loss, or care through life’s bigger transitions, we’re here to walk alongside you.

Book an appointment today at our Robina Town or Easy T practice and head into summer feeling confident about your health.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia. What makes it so serious is that it often develops quietly, showing no signs until it has already advanced. The good news is that medical research has shown one powerful way to change this story: lung cancer screening.

What is Lung Cancer Screening?

Lung cancer screening uses a low-dose CT scan to take detailed images of the lungs. The scan looks for small growths known as nodules. Most nodules are not cancer, but finding and monitoring them early gives doctors the chance to act before cancer develops or spreads.

Unlike standard x-rays, low-dose CT scans are designed to minimise radiation exposure while still producing clear images. This balance makes them safe and highly effective for screening purposes.

Why Screening is Important

Early-stage lung cancer is much easier to treat than advanced disease. When cancer is caught early, treatment options are more successful and many people can return to their normal lives. Waiting until symptoms appear—such as a persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, or coughing up blood—often means the cancer is already at a later stage.

That’s why screening is offered to people who feel healthy and have no signs of lung problems. It’s not about responding to symptoms, but about staying one step ahead.

Who is Eligible?

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program focuses on those at higher risk.

You may be eligible if:

• You are between 50 and 70 years old
• You currently smoke, or you quit within the last 10 years
• You have smoked the equivalent of 30 pack-years (for example, one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years)
• You do not currently have symptoms of lung cancer

If you meet these criteria, your GP can refer you for a free, Medicare-covered scan every two years.

When to See a Doctor Straight Away

Screening is not a substitute for medical care if you have symptoms. If you notice a new or ongoing cough, unexplained tiredness, chest or shoulder pain, coughing up blood, or sudden shortness of breath, it’s important to see your doctor promptly—even if your last screening was clear.

The Bigger Picture: Prevention and Support

While smoking is the single biggest risk factor for lung cancer, quitting at any stage reduces your risk. Programs and resources are available to help people stop smoking, and combining that with regular screening can dramatically improve outcomes.

Lung cancer screening saves lives by finding disease early—often before symptoms begin. If you’re in the higher-risk group, talk to your doctor about whether you’re eligible.

Even if you feel well, screening could be the step that protects your future health.

For more details about the National Lung Cancer Screening Program, visit: www.health.gov.au/nlcsp

Book an appointment with your GP in the first instance to request lung cancer screening.

If you or your child has asthma, having a clear asthma action plan is one of the most important tools for managing the condition confidently and safely. This simple written plan helps you recognise when asthma is under control, when it’s getting worse, and what to do in an emergency.

What Is an Asthma Action Plan?

An asthma action plan is a written set of instructions developed with your GP. It outlines:
Your usual asthma medications and how to take them

How to monitor your symptoms or peak flow readings

What to do if your symptoms worsen

What to do during a severe asthma attack

Emergency contacts and steps

It acts as a guide for you, your family, school staff (if your child has asthma), or carers, so that everyone knows exactly what to do if things change.

Why Do You Need an Asthma Action Plan?

Asthma symptoms can change quickly, and it’s not always obvious when a mild episode could become something more serious. An action plan for asthma gives you a clear step-by-step guide to follow in every situation, from daily care to a potential emergency.

Research shows that people who have an asthma action plan are:

Less likely to need emergency care

More likely to take their preventer medication correctly

More confident in recognising and managing worsening symptoms

For children, it also helps teachers and caregivers respond appropriately and quickly.

Asthma Action Plan for Adults

Even if you’ve had asthma for years, symptoms can change over time. Your asthma management plan should be reviewed at least once a year or if:

You have had worsening symptoms or more flare-ups

You’ve changed medication or dosage

You’ve been to hospital or needed urgent care

You require tailored support through aged care services

Your GP will help you create a plan that suits your lifestyle, work demands and medication routine, and update it as needed.

Asthma Action Plan for Children

A child’s asthma can look different to an adult’s and may change as they grow. A child asthma action plan is important to help families, teachers, and childcare staff know exactly what signs to watch for and how to respond.

Your child’s plan will cover:

Their regular medications and when to take them

What to do if they start coughing, wheezing or feeling short of breath

What to do during an asthma attack

When to call 000

We recommend bringing your plan to school and ensuring staff have a copy on file. A spacer and reliever medication should also be kept on hand if recommended.

How Your GP Can Help

Your GP plays a key role in asthma care. They can:

Confirm or update your asthma diagnosis

Discuss symptoms and possible triggers

Help you use your inhalers and spacers correctly

Create or update your asthma attack action plan

Review medications and ensure your plan matches your current needs

For those dealing with additional health concerns, such as weight management or hormone-related conditions, your GP can provide holistic support alongside asthma treatment. We also offer spirometry testing to identify and manage conditions affecting your lungs, including asthma and COPD.

We take the time to listen and support you in living well with asthma, whether you have mild symptoms or more severe flare-ups.

Need a New or Updated Plan?

If you don’t have a written asthma action plan or it’s been a while since your last review, book an appointment with your GP. It could be the difference between managing a flare-up early and needing urgent care. Learn more about our asthma care services.

Osteoporosis is a silent condition that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures. Women over 50, particularly those with a family history or other risk factors, may benefit from a bone density test to assess bone strength and identify early signs of osteoporosis.

A bone density test, also known as a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, is a simple, non-invasive procedure that measures bone mineral density. During the test, you lie on a padded table while a low-dose X-ray scanner passes over specific areas of your body, usually the lower spine and hips. The scan takes only a few minutes and is painless. The results help determine if you have osteoporosis or are at risk of fractures, guiding further management and preventive measures.

When it comes to maintaining your health and wellbeing, your General Practitioner (GP) plays an essential role that extends far beyond diagnosing and treating illnesses. A trusted GP is your partner in health, providing ongoing care and guidance throughout every stage of life.

Why a GP Matters in Your Health Journey

1. Personalised Care

Your GP gets to know you, your medical history, and your unique health needs. This familiarity allows them to provide tailored advice, identify potential risks early, and recommend treatments or lifestyle changes that work best for you.

2.
Booster shots are needed for some vaccines to maintain immunity over time. While the initial vaccine dose provides a foundation of protection, boosters enhance the immune response and help sustain long-term immunity. This is particularly important for vaccines like the flu and whooping cough, where immunity usually wanes over time.

Boosting immunity: Important vaccines for Type 2 Diabetes patients

At Robina Town Medical Centre, we believe in the power of vaccines to protect against serious illnesses, especially for those managing chronic conditions like type 2 diabetes.

Why Vaccinations Matter for People with Diabetes

Living with type 2 diabetes increases the risk of complications from illnesses such as the flu, pneumonia, and COVID-19. Even if diabetes is well-managed, the immune system may be less effective in fighting infections, and illnesses can make blood sugar levels harder to control. Immunisation offers crucial protection, helping to reduce the risk of these complications and keeping individuals healthier throughout the year.

Key Vaccinations

Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

The annual flu vaccine is strongly recommended for everyone, particularly those with diabetes. The flu can lead to severe complications for people living with chronic conditions, and diabetes makes it more difficult for the body to combat infections. Flu season typically runs from June to September in Australia, so it’s important to get vaccinated before the peak season, usually starting in April.

At Robina Town Medical Centre, our flu clinic makes it easy to stay protected. The flu vaccine is free under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for those aged 65 and over, pregnant women, children under five, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those with certain medical conditions, including diabetes.

COVID-19 Vaccine

People living with diabetes are at a higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19. All vaccines approved in Australia (AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax) are suitable for use in individuals with diabetes. Keeping up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations remains one of the best ways to protect against severe outcomes from the virus.

Other Recommended Vaccines for People with Diabetes

In addition to flu and COVID-19 vaccines, the following are recommended for adults living with type 2 diabetes:

Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough): A booster shot is advised for adults over 65 if they haven’t had one in the past 10 years.

Hepatitis B: Recommended for travellers heading to areas where hepatitis B is prevalent.

Herpes Zoster (Shingles): This vaccine is recommended for those aged 70–79 and is available for free under the NIP.

Pneumococcal Vaccine: Type 2 diabetes puts individuals at increased risk of pneumococcal disease. Adults with diabetes should receive three doses of the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (23vPPV), spaced over their lifetime.

Stay Up to Date with Your Vaccinations

If you’re living with diabetes, it’s important to check in with your GP to ensure your vaccinations are up to date. Vaccinations play a vital role in reducing the risk of complications from preventable diseases and keeping blood glucose levels stable during illness.

At Robina Town Medical Centre, we also have a Diabetes Educator on site and our GP’s can assist with chronic disease management.
