Men’s Health Checks

Men's Health Checks – What to Get Tested and When

Men are statistically less likely than women to visit their GP for preventative care, often only booking in once something is already wrong. Regular health checks catch problems early, when they're easiest to treat, and give you a clear picture of your overall health as you age.

In Your 20s and 30s

Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

Even in your 20s, it's worth having a baseline blood pressure and cholesterol check, particularly if there's a family history of heart disease. These simple tests give your GP a reference point for future visits.

Mental Health

Men in this age group are at higher risk of suicide than any other demographic. A regular check-in with your GP about stress, sleep, and mood isn't just about physical health, it's an opportunity to talk about how you're actually doing.

Sexual Health

If you're sexually active, particularly with new or multiple partners, regular STI screening is recommended. This is a quick, confidential test your GP can arrange.

In Your 40s

Diabetes Screening

Type 2 diabetes risk increases significantly from your 40s onward, especially if you're overweight or have a family history. A simple blood test can identify this early, well before symptoms appear.

Heart Disease Risk Assessment

From age 45, GPs recommend a formal cardiovascular risk assessment, combining blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight, and lifestyle factors to calculate your risk of heart attack or stroke over the next five years.

Skin Checks

Queensland has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. A full skin check from your 40s onward, and earlier if you have a lot of moles or sun exposure history, is one of the most valuable checks you can do.

Bowel Cancer Screening

From age 45 (or earlier with family history), bowel cancer screening becomes a priority. This usually starts with the free national bowel screening kit sent by mail, followed up with your GP if results are abnormal.

In Your 50s and Beyond

Prostate Health

Prostate cancer risk increases with age. Rather than a blanket recommendation for testing, your GP will talk you through the risks and benefits of PSA testing based on your individual risk factors, family history, and preferences.

Bone and Joint Health

Osteoporosis isn't just a women's health issue. Men with risk factors such as low testosterone, steroid use, or a sedentary lifestyle may benefit from bone density screening.

Don't Wait for Symptoms

The biggest barrier to men's health isn't lack of access, it's the tendency to wait until something feels wrong. Many of the conditions above, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, early diabetes, and even some cancers, have no symptoms in their early stages.Your GP can also help with quitting smoking or vaping.
