45–49 Year Old Health Check
Your mid-forties are a pivotal time for your health. Life is busy, and it's easy to put yourself last, but this is exactly the age when a proactive health check can make a real and lasting difference. The 45–49 Year Old Health Check is designed to catch potential health issues before they become serious, and it's fully covered by Medicare.
Who Is It For?
This check is available to anyone aged 45 to 49. It is particularly recommended if you:
- Have a family history of chronic disease, including heart disease, diabetes, or cancer
- Are carrying excess weight or have experienced unexplained weight changes
- Smoke, or have smoked in the past
- Have a sedentary lifestyle or work in a high-stress occupation
- Have noticed changes in your energy, mood, or general wellbeing
- Simply haven't had a thorough health review in a while
If you are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background, you may be eligible for a health assessment from the age of 18. Please speak to your GP.
What's Involved in the 45-49 yr health check?
The 45–49 health check is a comprehensive, longer appointment with your GP and may also involve our nursing team. It covers a thorough review of your health across multiple areas.
Health history and lifestyle review
Your GP will gather detailed information about your personal and family medical history, current medications, and lifestyle habits including diet, physical activity, alcohol and smoking, as well as any symptoms you've been putting off mentioning.
Physical examination and investigations
Depending on your individual needs, this may include blood pressure measurement, weight and waist circumference, and referrals for fasting blood tests to assess cholesterol, blood glucose, kidney function, liver function, and more. Your need for additional tests or investigations will be assessed, for example:
- Cervical screening
- Mammogram
- Vaccinations
- Prostate assessment
Health risk assessment
Your GP will use the information gathered to assess your risk of developing common chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and kidney disease.
Advice and goal setting
Your GP will discuss the findings with you in plain language and work with you to identify realistic, achievable strategies for improving or maintaining your health, whether that's dietary changes, increasing activity, quitting smoking, or managing stress.
Referrals
Where appropriate, your GP will refer you to allied health professionals such as a dietitian, exercise physiologist, or psychologist, or to specialist medical care if further investigation is needed.
It's Fully Covered by Medicare
The 45–49 Year Old Health Check is a Medicare-funded service, meaning there is no out-of-pocket cost for eligible patients. Given what it can detect and prevent, it's one of the most valuable appointments you can make for yourself this year.
What Happens After the Check?
For many people, the health check is a reassuring confirmation that things are on track. For others, it opens a conversation about changes that could genuinely improve their quality of life. Either way, you'll leave better informed about your health than when you walked in.
If your results indicate an elevated risk of chronic disease, your GP may recommend a GP Management Plan, which can give you access to subsidised allied health services under Medicare.
If you're between the ages of 45 and 49, don't wait for a reason to book. This check is about getting ahead of problems before they start. Contact Robina Town Medical Centre to make an appointment.
