Birth & Hospital Transition
The final weeks of pregnancy and the days after birth can feel like a whirlwind. Knowing what to expect and having someone in your corner makes all the difference. At Robina Town Medical Centre, your GP plays an important role in helping you prepare for birth and supporting you through the transition home.
We help bridge the gap between hospital and home, so your care feels continuous and you're never left wondering what comes next.
Preparing for Birth
As your due date approaches, there are practical and medical steps your GP can help you with. This is a good time to discuss your birth preferences, understand what to expect during labour and delivery, and make sure everything is in order before you head to hospital.
Your GP can also ensure your antenatal shared care records are up to date and that the hospital team has everything they need.
We can guide you through:
- What to expect before and after birth
- Your birth plan and birth preferences
- Signs of labour and when to go to hospital
- What to pack and practical preparation
- Liaising with your obstetric team where needed
After Birth: Returning Home
Coming home with a new baby is one of life's most joyful moments and it can also be incredibly overwhelming. Your GP is here to support both you and your baby in those early days and weeks, providing the kind of continuity that hospital care alone can't always offer.
Post-birth support includes:
- Post-birth check-ups for mum and baby - monitoring your recovery and your baby's growth and wellbeing
- Recovery support - including wound care for tears and episiotomies, pain management, and advice on returning to activity
- Referrals - to physiotherapy, lactation consultants, or other specialists if needed
- Emotional check-ins - your GP will keep an eye on how you're feeling, not just physically but emotionally too
Newborn Care
Your baby will need a check-up shortly after coming home from the hospital. Some of our GPs have a special interest in newborn care and can assess your baby's health, weight gain, feeding, and development, and address any concerns you may have in those first weeks of life.
We also offer a dedicated Newborn and Babies service for new parents who need support with breastfeeding, unsettled babies, and early feeding difficulties.
Postnatal Care for Mum
The six-week postnatal check is an important milestone, but your GP is here for you before that too. If you're experiencing pain, concerns about your wound, trouble feeding, or you're simply not feeling like yourself, please don't wait - book in and let us help.
We also screen for postnatal depression and anxiety, which are more common than many people realise. Early support makes a real difference, and there is no shame in asking for help.
