First Trimester Care
Finding out you're pregnant is a significant moment, and the weeks that follow can feel exciting, overwhelming, and full of questions. At Robina Town Medical Centre, experienced GPs are here to support you right from the start, helping you navigate those early weeks with confidence and care.
Whether this is your first pregnancy or you've been here before, we'll make sure you feel informed, supported, and looked after every step of the way.
What Is First Trimester Care?
The first trimester covers the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, a time of rapid change for both you and your growing baby. Early GP care during this period is important for confirming your pregnancy, understanding your options, and putting the right support in place from the outset.
At RTMC, we provide comprehensive first trimester care that includes pregnancy confirmation, early blood tests, dating scans, and a range of screening options. If things don't go to plan, we also offer compassionate miscarriage support and follow-up care.
We Support You With:
- Pregnancy confirmation - blood tests and urine testing to confirm your pregnancy and establish how far along you are
- Dating scans - referrals for ultrasound to accurately date your pregnancy and check on your baby's early development
- Early blood tests - including blood group, rubella immunity, full blood count, thyroid function and more
- Early screening options - including first trimester combined screening for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome
- NIPT discussion and referrals - Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) provides more detailed chromosomal information and your GP can help you understand your options
- Pre-eclampsia screening and referrals to detect risk and start treatment to prevent this condition
- Management of early pregnancy symptoms - such as nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and pelvic discomfort
- Miscarriage care and emotional support - if your pregnancy does not continue, our GPs are here to provide compassionate care, follow-up testing, and referrals to additional support
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
At your first pregnancy appointment your GP will confirm your pregnancy, order relevant blood tests and referrals if needed, and talk through any questions or concerns you may have.
It's a good idea to come prepared with information about your last menstrual period, any medications you're currently taking, and your family medical history if known.
Antenatal Shared Care
From around 12 weeks, many women transition into our antenatal shared care program, which allows you to share your pregnancy care between your regular GP and the team at Gold Coast University Hospital or Tweed Hospital. This means you can maintain your relationship with a doctor who knows you, while also accessing specialist maternity services when you need them.
If Things Don't Go to Plan
Sadly, miscarriage is common, affecting approximately one in five pregnancies. If you experience bleeding, cramping, or other concerning symptoms in early pregnancy, please contact us as soon as possible. Our GPs will see you promptly, arrange any necessary investigations, and provide the support you need, both physically and emotionally.
You don't have to face this alone. We can also refer you to counselling and support services if you need additional help.
When Should I Book My First Appointment?
We recommend booking as soon as you think you may be pregnant, ideally before eight weeks. Early care gives your GP the opportunity to identify any risk factors early, ensure you're taking the right supplements if needed and get your antenatal care off to the best possible start.
Why Choose RTMC for Your First Trimester Care
At Robina Town Medical Centre, we understand that early pregnancy is a time when continuity of care really matters. Seeing the same GP across your first trimester means your doctor gets to know you, your history, and your needs, so you can feel genuinely supported. We also have female doctors available at both of our practices for patients who prefer this, and we welcome new patients.
Many GP's at our practice have completed additional maternity alignment training to be able to provide dedicated pregnancy care.Â
