Heart Health Checks
A Heart Health Check is a simple, preventative check-up with your GP that helps assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 5 years.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, and many people are unaware of their risk because conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol often have no symptoms. A Heart Health Check is an important first step in understanding your risk and taking action early.
What is a Heart Health Check?
A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute appointment with your GP or practice nurse.
It looks at a range of factors that affect heart health and uses a clinically validated risk calculator to estimate your chance of a heart attack or stroke over the next five years.
Who should have a Heart Health Check?
A Heart Health Check is recommended for people who do not already have heart disease and who fall into one of the following groups:
- Adults aged 45–79 years
- People with diabetes from 35 years
- First Nations people from 30 years
If you’re unsure whether a Heart Health Check is right for you, your GP can help guide you.
What does the check involve?
Your GP or nurse will work through four key steps:
1. Discuss
We’ll talk with you about factors that can affect heart health, including:
- Smoking status
- Diabetes
- Medications
- Other medical conditions
- Family history
- Cultural background and postcode
2. Check
We’ll check important measurements such as:
- Blood pressure
- Cholesterol levels
- Blood sugar levels
3. Assess
Using this information, your GP will calculate your individual risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years.
4. Plan
We’ll develop a personalised plan to help lower your risk. This may include:
- Lifestyle changes to support heart health
- Referrals to allied health professionals such as dietitians
- Medications to manage blood pressure or cholesterol, if appropriate
Understanding your results
Your results will place you in one of three risk categories:
- Low risk (less than 5%)
- Intermediate risk (5–10%)
- High risk (10% or more)
Your GP will explain what your result means and discuss what steps can help reduce your risk. Follow-up checks will be recommended based on your individual situation
