Travel Medicine + Vaccinations
The GP's consulting from our rooms provide a range of travel medicine and travel vaccination services to assist individuals and families to prepare for their overseas travel plans.
Be sure to see your GP with plenty of notice before your trip. Depending on your travel destination, a schedule of multiple travel vaccinations are often required to ensure full immunity prior to your trip.
Travel Health Risks
If you are travelling overseas you need to understand the health risks applicable to the countries you are visiting. Whatever your age, level of fitness and level of overall general health, health issues should be considered in your travel planning.
The doctors in our rooms are able to provide advice about health issues and vaccinations in preparation for travel.
- Travel health planning should begin at least 8 weeks before departure. Although, it is never too late to seek advice if you don't have this much time.
- Your GP can provide advice about health risks at your destination, including travel vaccines and/or medications you may need and advice to prevent other diseases that vaccines do not cover.
- Some medical conditions increase the risk of getting a blood clot during a flight. Your GP can advise on precautions to take.
Travel and Chronic Health Conditions
If you have a chronic health condition we strongly urge you to have a thorough check-up with your GP before you leave to ensure your condition is stable and you have an action plan for managing any issues that come up during your trip.
Your GP can provide a letter regarding your prescription medication requirements to keep with your medication during any international customs checks. We recommend to keep a stock of your medication in your hand luggage. Also, be aware of the laws around medications in the countries you are travelling to, as they do vary.
Contact us at least 8 weeks before departure to ensure vaccinations that require a course of treatment can be completed in time. A checkup closer to your departure is also beneficial to reduce the risk of illness and to ensure prescriptions are up to date and in sufficient quantity for your trip.
Travel Vaccinations
Immunisations and vaccinations are a necessity for overseas travel to certain countries.
The specific type of travel vaccinations you need vary from country to country. Different countries can have infectious diseases that are very rare or do not even exist in Australia. It’s vital to have the correct vaccinations before departing Australia to protect your health.
Some travel vaccines require an immunisation schedule with a course of two or more injections/doses over a number of weeks to provide full coverage against certain diseases. So it’s important to schedule an appointment with your doctor at least 6-8 weeks before you travel.
Some of the diseases you may need to consider protection for include:
- Cholera
- Hepatitis A
- Hepatitis B
- Japanese Encephalitis
- Meningococcal Disease
- Rabies
- Tick-borne Encephalitis
- Tuberculosis
- Typhoid
- Chickenpox (Varicella)
- Influenza/Flu
Yellow Fever
While we can assist with all other travel vaccinations, Yellow Fever vaccination is not offered at our practice. Travel Health Doctors in Southport is a registered Yellow Fever vaccination clinic. Alternatively, visit Travelvax to find an approved Yellow Fever vaccination clinic in other locations.
Some countries require proof of vaccination against Yellow Fever before you are allowed to enter.
