Female Sexual Health
If you’re looking for a friendly and comfortable clinic to take care of your sexual health, our women’s health team are here to help. Whether you’re post-menopausal, married or single, a mother, young adult or teenager, we can offer guidance and advice to deal with any sexual health issues or concerns that are impacting your life.
We recognise the sensitive nature of sexually related health matters. It can be embarrassing going to a doctor to discuss your sexual health concerns. We assure you that your privacy is protected. It’s much better for both your physical and mental health to have issues diagnosed and treated as soon as possible, particularly if you want to continue an active sex life. What’s more, some conditions can permanently affect your fertility or cause chronic pelvic pain, making prompt diagnosis and treatment a priority.
Common Symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Infections – STI’s
Some common symptoms to be aware of include:
- Itchiness around the genital area
- Rash, sores, ulcers or small lumps around the genitals
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Burning sensation when going to the toilet
- Unusual bleeding after sex or between periods
- Pain during sex
- Acute pelvic pain at any time
These symptoms may indicate a sexually transmitted disease or infection.
Sexual Health Checks
Sexual health screening tests help to diagnose the particular disease or infection causing you pain and discomfort. While the exact screening tests needed come down to the individual and their symptoms, a urine test or vaginal / cervical swab are the most common.
Urine Test
Screens for for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea
Vaginal Swab or Cervical Swab
Typically used to identify Trichomonas, Herpes, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and Gonorrhoea
Blood Test
Detects antibodies in the blood to identify and diagnose Hepatitis, Syphilis and HIV
Your doctor will explain the procedure to you and help you to feel as comfortable as possible. The sample from your test will be sent to a laboratory for analysis and the results returned to your doctor within a couple of days.
Treatment of STI’s
There’s no cure for some STI’s and symptoms may go away on their own. For others, medication can help to treat the disease or infection, for example antibiotics or anti-viral medications. Sexual partners may also need to take medication.
After diagnosis and during the treatment period it’s important to avoid sexual contact to avoid spreading the infection to others.
New Relationships
No matter your age, women should be aware of the risk of sexually transmitted infections when beginning new relationships. While some STI’s show symptoms that are easily visible such as sores, swelling or discharge, others cause no symptoms at all. One example is Chlamydia, which often displays no visible symptoms but can be easily diagnosed using a swap or urine sample. More often than not, issues are simple to treat.
