Parenting & Family Support
Growing a family is one of the most meaningful things a person can do, and one of the most demanding. The medical side of parenthood is just one part of the picture. At Robina Town Medical Centre, we recognise that being a parent affects every aspect of your life, including your relationships, your mental health, and your sense of self.
We bring together support across parenting, mental health, and family wellbeing so you can access the care you need in one familiar place. Strong families start with supported parents.
Perinatal Mental Health
The perinatal period - from pregnancy through to the first year after birth - is a time of enormous emotional change. Anxiety and depression during this time are far more common than many people acknowledge, and they can affect both mothers and fathers.
If you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or disconnected from your baby or partner, please speak to your GP. These feelings are valid, and with the right support, things can improve significantly.
We provide:
- Screening for perinatal and postnatal anxiety and depression using validated tools in a supportive, non-judgmental environment
- Mental health care plans - providing access to Medicare-rebated psychology sessions
- Referrals to psychology services - including psychologists experienced in perinatal mental health
- Medication review - where appropriate, your GP can discuss safe treatment options during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Parenting Guidance
There is no manual for parenting, and it's normal to have questions, especially in the early months and years. GPs are here to help with the practical and emotional challenges that come with raising children, from sleep concerns and feeding difficulties to behaviour, discipline, and managing family stress.
We can help with:
- Sleep concerns -Â including unsettled babies, cry/fuss and toddler sleep challenges
- Feeding support - breastfeeding difficulties and introducing solids
- Behavioural concerns - support for parents navigating challenging behaviour or emotional regulation in young children
Partner and Family Support
The arrival of a baby doesn't just change the person who gave birth, it changes the whole family. Partners can experience their own anxiety, depression, or feelings of being overwhelmed, and this is just as important to address.
We welcome partners and family members to attend appointments and are happy to discuss how the whole family is coping. We can also provide referrals and resources specifically aimed at supporting partners through the transition to parenthood.
When to Seek Support
You don't need to be in crisis to ask for help. If things feel hard, or you're simply not enjoying parenthood the way you hoped you would, that's enough of a reason to book in. Early support is always better than waiting until things reach a breaking point.
