Implanon Insertion

Implanon Insertion: Convenient Contraceptive Option

Choosing the right contraceptive method is an important decision. If you're looking for an effective, long-term contraceptive option, Implanon may be the right choice for you. The GP’s in our rooms are here to provide you with the information, support and care you need throughout the process of choosing a suitable contraceptive method, and guiding you through the Implanon insertion procedure.

What is Implanon?

Implanon is a small, flexible rod that is inserted under the skin in your upper arm. It releases a hormone called etonogestrel, which prevents pregnancy for up to three years. Implanon is more than 99% effective, making it one of the most reliable forms of contraception available.

Why Choose Implanon?

There are several benefits to choosing Implanon as your contraceptive method:

  • Long-lasting: Implanon offers long-term protection against pregnancy, meaning you can have peace of mind without worrying about daily pills or monthly appointments.
  • Effective: With a success rate of more than 99%, Implanon is considered one of the most reliable contraceptive options available.
  • Convenient: Once inserted, Implanon is virtually invisible and does not interfere with your daily activities. You can continue with your normal routine without interruptions.
  • Reversible: If you decide you no longer need contraception or wish to explore other options, the Implant can be easily removed by a GP with training in Implanon removal.
  • Hormone-based: Implanon's hormone, etonogestrel, may reduce menstrual cramps and make periods lighter for some individuals.

What Happens During Implanon Insertion?

GPs consulting at our practices aim to make the Implanon insertion process as comfortable as possible. Here's what you can expect during your visit:

  • Initial consultation with one of the providers in our rooms: They will discuss your individual needs, preferences, and any concerns you may have about Implanon.
  • Preparation: On the day of your insertion, they will guide you through the necessary preparations and address your questions or concerns.
  • Local anaesthesia: To ensure your comfort during the procedure, a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the area around the insertion site.
  • Insertion procedure: Your GP will make a small incision in your upper arm and delicately insert the Implanon rod beneath your skin. The procedure is typically quick and most patients do not experience pain.
  • Post-insertion care: After the insertion, your GP will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for the insertion site and discuss any potential side effects to be aware of.

Implanon is designed to be effective for up to three years. After this time, it is not a reliable method of contraception, and removal or replacement is necessary.

Implanon Removal

There are several reasons why you might want Implanon removed:

  • Desire to become pregnant: If you are planning to start a family, Implanon removal is a necessary step to restore your natural fertility.
  • Your contraceptive needs change: Your lifestyle and preferences may change, leading you to seek alternative contraceptive methods.
  • Side effects or complications: In some cases, individuals may experience side effects or complications. If this occurs, your GP can help address your concerns and guide you through the removal process.

The Implanon Removal Procedure

The procedure is very similar to the insertion of the implanon. Your GP will provide you with instructions on caring for the removal site and offer guidance on alternative contraceptive options, if needed.

If you're considering Implanon as your contraceptive method, we invite you to book an appointment with an experienced at Robina Town or Easy T Medical Centre. Some of the GP's in our rooms have additional training and experience in Implanon insertion and removal.  You can phone our reception team if you would like help choosing a doctor.

How do I book an appointment for implanon insertion concerns?

Please contact reception to book a consult with one of our GP’s who can help with Implanon concerns.

Please do not book online for these appointments.

Implanon FAQ

Do you use local anaesthetic for the procedure?

Yes, this is to numb the area for insertion.

How long does the insertion and removal of the Implanon take?

The actual procedure takes just a few minutes, but the preparation may take longer.

Is the implanon a long acting reversible contraceptive?

Yes, the implanon remains effective for three years and can be removed at any time by making an appointment with a GP with training in Implanon removal.

Will I get a scar?

You may have a very small scar on your upper arm.

Does the implanon make you gain weight?

There isn’t any evidence to suggest the implant causes weight gain.

Is the Implanon an effective method of contraception?

The Implanon has a 99% success rate, meaning 1 in 100 women fall pregnant with Implanon.

Does the Implanon cause vaginal bleeding?

You may experience some spotting days in your cycle. They may occur less frequently than in a natural cycle, but they can occur at unpredictable intervals.

What is the bleeding pattern during use of an Implanon?

Everyone will be different, though most women find they have lighter periods than before.

Changes to your cycle may last a few months while your body adjusts. See your doctor if you have long-lasting or heavy bleeding that continues.
